Schlumberger is the world's leading oilfield services provider. Their WesternGeco division provides land and marine seismic surveys for their global customer base. The result of these surveys provide 2- and 3-dimensional models of geological substrata to guide oil and gas exploration.
The project
K+A worked with WesternGeco's eSeismic team to transform a set of use cases and technical requirements for monitoring seismic survey crews into a complete application interface prototype and interaction design specification. The client requested us to design the UI in Silverlight as part of an agile development process.
Wireframes for status monitor screens
Our approach
We developed a series of diagrams to clarify user roles and permissions issues, then created wireframes and interaction prototypes in Silverlight.
Design for status monitor screen
We worked closely with domain experts to combine ideas realized in Google Earth and Excel into a single working prototype. This prototype was refined and extended to suit the needs of a field crew.
The result
Our development partner implemented the prototype with a production system. The first version of the application will be used by a field crew during 2011. K+A will conduct user research with the field crew during and following the test. This feedback will be used to guide further development.
