Schlumberger is the world's leading oilfield services provider for oil and gas companies around the world with 70.000 employees operating in 80 countries. The global intranet of Schlumberger (The Hub) is used by tens of thousands of users every day and contributed to by several thousand authors from around the globe. The Hub is run by a custom built CMS that was developed in the mid-nineties and contains several hundred thousand objects today.

The project

K+A began working with Schlumberger on a series of related projects in July 2002. We used our information architecture techniques to review the knowledge management requirements for the Schlumberger intranet. We reviewed the navigation systems for the public and internal web space and assisted the Knowledge Management architect team to refine their vision of the next generation system. Our work helped the team develop an Enterprise-wide classification scheme for organizing and distributing business-critical information throughout the company

The Web Space Survey, conducted in 2002-2003, provided Schlumberger management with important information for the planning, analysis and visualization the entire public and internal web space. The project involved designing a survey instrument for gathering information on the hundreds of web sites located throughout the company's web space in an XML database. K+A produced a multi-volume Schlumberger Web Catalog "to build a rich database of web services to better understand this depth, value, and cost." This series of catalogs, produced in both print and HTML format, included detailed information on each of the sites as well as strategy maps of the overall web space.

Working in collaboration with an internal advisory group, K+A defined a new information architecture and global navigation system for the central Schlumberger intranet, known as The Hub. The reorgnaization involved re-thinking the content of the top-level pages to include places for news, messages from the top management, systematic links to the world-wide operation units, and a matrix organization of the global functions and local operations.

The solution

Example of page design

After gaining approval for the plan from the advisory group, we took on the combined tasks of developing a new visual design with our partner Attoma Design. We developed graphic design guidelines, selected visual images to represent each company division, and delivered HTML page templates to the development group.

During the development phase, we reorganizing the current content on the site and implemented the graphic system on the top-level pages to match the new architecture.

The result

The new visual organization and visual design for The Hub has gained wide acceptance. Since the intial implementation, many new features have been added to provide Wiki, Blog, RSS and other new functionality.
