To identify the boundaries of the project, we create an inventory of the web sites, data bases and applications. From the start of each project we gather information on the terminology and organization of all sites in the customer's web space, to gain an operational understanding of the content involved.

We examine not only the terms being used but also the quality and organization of the information (categories, navigation, links between available resources). We analyze the major user processes: searching for and presenting information on the screen.

Reviewing the features of the websites of companies and organizations in the same field of activity is a good way to measure the current state of the art. We have developed methods for reviewing multiple sites, capturing the significant features of each site in a series of diagrams, and developing visual presentations that help our customers quickly see the strengths and weaknesses of their competition. This method is also useful to identify the areas of change in a current website that would make the most impact.

We carry out structured interviews with internal team members and, whenever possible, users that represent of different audiences selected by our customers. Even a small number of user interviews make it possible to observe how the existing sites are used in real situation.

By identifying what is found on the website by content type, we can assist the team to reorganize material in ways that are more understandable to users.

We examine the usage statistics and refer logs to discover what the current users choose to visit, where they enter the site(s), and how often they return. Visualizing these statistics as information graphics can help the team measure the web site's performance.
