Information Architecture for the Web

This seminar or workshop reviews the principles of information architecture for the web. The instructor will present a series of information architecture problems common to all web sites. Examples will be drawn from current web sites with a focus on web sites for museum and exhibitions.

Questions include:

  • Identifying patterns in information
  • Looking at the data behind the information
  • The key objectives of the web site
  • The overall structure of the web site
  • Matching the user's information requirements
  • What can be communicated better on the web
  • The role and limits of interaction
  • Types of information to be linked

Examples will illustrate how these problems can be solved. Emphasis will be on the common problems and the variety of solutions.

Analysis and Planning of Web Sites

This seminar will develop a greater understanding of how to apply information architecture techniques to the redesign of existing web sites and the planning of new projects. Visualization is a critical factor in successful planning of web site projects. Presentations include a variety of visualization techniques including isometric diagrams and flow charts. Methods for indicating global and local navigation structures, page types, static and dynamic pages, and interaction with applications and databases will be described.

Topics include:

  • Planning for individual web site: overview and major page detail
  • Application of isometric diagrams
  • Catalog of linked content, visualization of web site software products and processes
  • Competitive analysis, explanation of how a site works, catalog of major features, comparison of specific task pathways
  • Planning for complex sites, and set of related web sites

Examples will illustrate how these problems can be solved. Emphasis will be on the common problems and the variety of solutions.

Interactive Design

This seminar or workshop will develop an understanding of the principles of designing for the computer screen. Emphasis will be on the visual principles of two-dimensional design drawn from all forms of graphic arts, as they apply to screen design. Examples will be drawn from a combination of fine arts, graphic arts, and contemporary web pages. The purpose of the seminar is to raise participants awareness of what web designers can learn from fine arts, book, and publication design traditions.
